Housing affordability has become one of the most significant social and economic discussions in Canada. This information design project explores regional housing price trends across major Canadian cities, transforming complex data into an accessible visual narrative.
The objective was to communicate housing market insights through a single infographic that combines geographic visualization, statistical comparison, and storytelling principles, enabling viewers to quickly understand regional differences and broader market patterns.
Housing data often contains large amounts of information that can be difficult to interpret without context. The challenge was to present multiple data points, including regional housing values, market comparisons, and geographic relationships in a format that remained visually engaging while maintaining clarity and accuracy.
The design also needed to balance data density with readability, ensuring viewers could navigate the information without feeling overwhelmed.
“This self-initiated information design project explores the intersection of research, geographic visualization, and visual storytelling through the lens of Canada’s housing market.”
The infographic was developed around a geographical storytelling framework, using Canada as the primary visual anchor. Information was organized hierarchically to guide viewers from broad national trends toward more localized housing market insights.
A dark visual environment was chosen to create strong contrast and allow data points, illustrations, and statistical elements to stand out. Supporting visual elements were intentionally kept minimal, ensuring the information remained the focal point of the composition.
Custom illustrations, chart systems, and location-based indicators were integrated to strengthen comprehension and establish clear connections between the data and its geographic context.
Typography was selected for legibility and structure, helping create a clear reading flow while supporting the overall visual hierarchy of the piece.
Collected housing market statistics and regional information relevant to major Canadian cities and provinces.
Organized the data into logical categories and established a hierarchy for presenting key insights.
Developed a map-based framework to visually connect housing data with specific locations across Canada.
Created custom illustrations, charts, icons, and supporting graphic elements to improve accessibility and engagement.
Refined layout, typography, and visual hierarchy to ensure clarity, readability, and effective storytelling.
The final infographic demonstrates how information design can transform complex research into a compelling visual experience. By combining geographic context, data visualization, and thoughtful visual hierarchy, the project communicates housing market trends in a format that is both informative and engaging.
