This project explores a conceptual book cover redesign for The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, created as a special anniversary edition. The aim was to reinterpret a literary classic through a modern lens while preserving the elegance, excess, and emotional depth of the Jazz Age.
The core challenge was to visually express luxury, mystery, and nostalgia without relying on literal storytelling or character imagery. The cover needed to feel timeless yet contemporary, appealing to both long-time readers and a new generation encountering the novel for the first time.
“This project is a conceptual design created for portfolio exploration and is not affiliated with the original publisher or author’s estate.”
The visual direction draws inspiration from Gatsby’s enigmatic lifestyle and the opulence of 1920s New York. A restrained geometric motif was used to suggest structure, wealth, and repetition, mirroring themes of excess and illusion found in the narrative.
Colour choices lean toward warm golds and rich brown tones, evoking refinement and the glamour of the Jazz Age. Typography was selected to feel decorative yet controlled, striking a balance between modern legibility and classic sophistication.
The title typography takes center stage, designed to feel confident and iconic without overpowering the cover. Supporting type elements were kept minimal to maintain hierarchy and readability. The overall composition prioritizes clarity, elegance, and visual rhythm.
The final cover presents a luxurious and contemporary reinterpretation of The Great Gatsby, capturing its themes of ambition, beauty, and illusion. The design is adaptable for print and digital formats, positioning it as a collectible edition suitable for anniversary releases or premium publishing lines.
