The Torchbearers

Spiritual Identity Design

Background

The Torchbearers is a prayer ministry dedicated to “kindling the flame of prayer” and building spiritual community and fellowship. I was commissioned to design their logo, and because they loved the logo so much, I was also awarded the task of designing their website.

Challenges

  • Making the brand instantly identifiable as a Christian, prayer-based ministry without leaning overly into clichés or visual tropes.

  • Capturing both warmth and reverence: the logo had to invite engagement (welcoming, personal), yet retain solemnity appropriate to spiritual nature.

  • Ensuring that the identity works well across all applications — digital (website, social media), print (flyers, business cards), and signage.

note

“Designed for The Torchbearers, this identity was chosen and adopted by the client. I was further awarded the contract to design their website based on this identity.”

Design Approach

  • Executed a wide‐ranging sketch exploration (15+ design ideas) to surface diverse possibilities, including subtle “Easter eggs” or symbolic elements that might resonate.
  • Focused on strong, meaningful iconography tied to the idea of torch/flame/prayer while keeping shapes clean and scalable.
  • Refined typography to balance readability with character, choosing fonts that reflect both community and clarity.
  • Designed mockups in real contexts (logo on signage, on digital, on print) to validate legibility, harmony, and visual impact.

Design Process

Step I - Brand Noun

The client listed brand nouns that resonate with the brand:

Step II - Sketch Exploration

Lots of rough sketches to explore symbols, flame, torch, cross, or other Christian-prayer iconography.

Step III - Concept Narrowing

Selecting several of the strongest sketches and converting them into digital drafts.

Step IV - Mark Presentation

A brief explanation of the chosen logo marks requested by the client, to understand the decision behind each design.

Step V - Mark Combination

At this stage, the client selected two preferred marks, which I refined and combined into a single cohesive logo that embodied their vision.

Outcome

The client adopted the logo into production and expressed strong satisfaction. Being awarded the website design followed the logo work, reflecting trust in the identity and its application. The result is a brand identity that feels authentic to the ministry, striking a balance between spiritual symbolism, community approachability, and professional polish.
